Time to say NO to frozen or takeaway vegan pizzas and YES to homemade ones. Especially when we are talking of a Hummus Caramelized Onion Pizza. A pizza with no meat, cheese, or any animal product, and that you can adapt to your preferences! Without counting the fact that making your own pizza is so much more fun and satisfying than buying it; plus you can garnish it as much as you want!

VEGAN CARAMELIZED ONION PIZZA WITH HUMMUS
The hummus added on this Caramelized Onion Pizza adds a delicious savory/ lemony taste that replaces the cheese found on a traditional pizza, without compromising the taste at all!
I use store-bought hummus to make this pizza (either from Tesco, Home Bargains or Mark & Spencer in the UK) but you could also make one yourself. Here is a good hummus recipe if you need.
Also, the hummus is highly recommended to top this pizza with, but feel free to replace it with any other topping such as homemade or industrial vegan cheese.
BEST HUMMUS CARAMELIZED ONION PIZZA RECIPE
Why is this pizza better than traditional cheese pizzas, you ask?
First of all, this Hummus Caramelized Onion Pizza is:
-vegan and healthy (my favourite documentary to recommend if you want to understand the benefits of a plant-based diet is “What The Health”, which you can find on Netflix).
-low calorie compared to traditional pizzas (see nutrition facts at the end of the page for more information).
-quick and easy-to-make (you make the veggie stir-fry for the pizza while the pizza dough is rising, and then just have to throw it in the oven).
-adaptable to your taste and preferences (as you can substitute the veggies I used with your favorite vegetables).
This recipe is not gluten-free, but feel free to check out my gluten-free dinner recipes such as this Easy Chickpea Curry (in only 30 minutes!) or this Coconut Red Lentil Dhal (gluten-free | oil-free).
VEGAN NO CHEESE HUMMUS PIZZA ICELAND
If you are vegan and live in the UK, you have probably tried or heard of their ‘no cheese houmous pizza’. I have tried it and it was simple and relatively enjoyable. But not satisfying enough to stop me from making my own recipe!
The ‘vegan no cheese houmous pizza’ from Iceland is nice if you are looking for a quick and occasional treat. However, the quality of the pizza cannot even be compared to the quality of a homemade vegan hummus pizza!
PIZZA BASE FOR VEGAN HUMMUS PIZZA
The base for this Hummus Caramelized Onion Pizza is inspired by the ingredients and method used for my Easy French Baguettes (no machine) recipe.
To make the dough, you will need white bread flour (can use plain white flour), active yeast, olive oil, salt, and warm water. Simply mix all the ingredients and knead with your hands to form a ball. The secret is then to cover the dough and let it rise for about one hour before shaping the pizza dough.
Scroll down to the recipe instructions at the end of the page for more details on how to make the pizza base!
HOW TO MAKE HUMMUS CARAMELIZED ONION PIZZA?
Please note this is just an overview of the recipe. Scroll down to the end of the page to see the full printable recipe.
1- Make the pizza dough and cover it for one hour.
This is the reusable lids I use to cover my pizza dough. I was hesitant at first about buying this product. But it is really really worth the 7 pounds as you get all sizes you need and won’t ever need to use cellophane film wrap again! Useful and much better for the environment; I definitely recommend!
2- Meanwhile, heat pan with olive oil and add the onion. Cook until slightly brown.
3- Add garlic cloves, red pepper, and spices (turmeric, ground coriander, chilli powder, ground nutmeg, and cumin seeds). Cook for 2 more minutes.
4- Add cherry tomatoes and courgette and mix well.
5- Shape the pizza dough, spread tomato paste on it and top it with the veggie stir fry.
6- Bake for 17 to 20 minutes, and top with as much hummus as you want!
HOW TO CARAMELIZE ONION FOR PIZZA?
Simply heat a pan with vegetable oil (I use olive oil). Add the sliced onion to the pan and sauté the onion on high heat until brown. For this recipe, we do not want to cook the onions too much as they will also be baked afterward on the pizza dough. Therefore, make sure you stop caramelizing the onions when they become slightly brown. I recommend using brown onion, but red onion would also work.
